Only the Brave is a collaborative series centred on hats as objects of identity. Each work is painted on a simple, neutral background to keep the focus on form, surface, and mark. 
 
For this piece, we begin by discussing colour and placement. Emma paints the hat, establishing structure, tone, and realism. The work is then passed to Struan, who adds graffiti marks directly onto the surface. Emma returns to the painting to refine details and knock back the graffiti so it sits within the work rather than on top of it.
The process is about balance — control and disruption, realism and intervention. Each hat becomes a shared surface where both styles are visible, edited, and resolved into a single image.
