Breaking Lines
By Struan HopwoodBreaking Lines continues Struan Hopwood's exploration of identity through a visual language that draws from portraiture, illustration, street art, comics, fashion and popular culture. Rather than presenting identity as something fixed, the work reflects the way we are shaped by countless influences, from the images we consume and the people we meet to the memories, experiences and stories that stay with us. Together, these fragments become something entirely our own.
Although the painting appears to be assembled from torn paper and layered collage, every element has been meticulously painted by hand. The illusion of ripped surfaces creates a visual metaphor for identity itself, revealing that beneath every layer lies another story, another influence, another version of who we are.
Throughout the composition, bold graphic patterning sits alongside highly rendered realism, allowing contrasting visual languages to exist within the same portrait. These deliberate shifts between abstraction and realism encourage the viewer to look beyond first impressions, revealing that identity is never defined by a single image, but by the accumulation of everything that has shaped us.
