By Struan Hopwood in collaboration with Emma McAdam-Marmont
Bear With Me brings together a panda and popcorn through a playful mix of realism, illustration and graphic detail, creating a single image from distinctly different visual styles.
Created in collaboration by husband-and-wife artists Struan Hopwood and Emma McAdam-Marmont, the work moves between detailed realism and bold, graphic mark-making. Hand-painted torn edges divide each section, creating the illusion of different images being ripped apart and pieced back together, while careful shifts in scale, shape and colour allow the composition to connect as one.
From a distance, the image reads as a whole. Up close, the changes in technique, texture and detail reveal themselves, blurring the line between painted realism, illustration and collage.
Bear With Me is playful by nature, with a nod to nostalgia and a title that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Familiar imagery is reworked in an unexpected way, inviting you to look a little closer at how it has all been put together.
